Unix / Linux Systems Administrator
SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for administering the day-to-day operations of the various operating systems. A Systems Administrator is also responsible for researching server/maintenance hardware and software products to determine those which best meet the company needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Administers day-to-day operations of operating systems
- Develops project plans for the implementation or re-implementation of new technology and systems
- Provides integrated team support and maintenance of hardware and software
- Researches server/maintenance hardware and software products to determine those which best meet company needs
- Assists with product evaluations and new products/technologies
- Assists with the monitoring of performance and maintenance of security
- Maintains software and hardware inventories
- Provides liaison support between the Network Administration team, vendors, and the desktop support team as needed
- Provides leadership to support teams for all tier-2 escalations
- Supports Unix/Linux machines. Including; host security; performance analysis and corrections; disk space mgmt; network issues; hardware failures
- Automates routine tasks such as data metric gathering and summarization for existing services
- Documents maintenance and support procedures for routine and complex tasks.
- Participates in a 24x7 on-call support rotation and off-hours maintenance windows as necessary
- Frequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 20 pounds when setting up equipment
- Other duties as assigned
SPECIFICATIONS:
- 3+ years UNIX shell and perl scripting (bourne, ksh, csh, sed, awk, etc.)
- 3+ years of UNIX experience
- 2+ years experience and understanding of several of the following technologies Java, JBoss, Apache, Oracle and System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
- Experience in large-scale enterprise software development lifecycle
- 3+ years experience as a Unix Systems Administrator with at least one year supporting a highly available 24x7 environment.
- Experience in on-call environments.
- Effective problem-solving skills, organizational skills and detail orientation

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Baccalaureate Degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or Information Systems preferred
- Analytical graduate work a plus.
- 5+ years of work experience specifically in the Information Technology field.
- Unix and Linux Certifications a must.
- Knowledge of Red Hat and Solaris
